BlackBerry Brand Will Live On In New TCL Deal | Centramic
The transaction gives TCL Communication the right to design and manufacture BlackBerry-branded devices
In support of its transition as a security software company, BlackBerry announced a licensing partnership that will see China's TCL Communications design and manufacture BlackBerry-branded mobile devices.
BlackBerry smartphone in September revealed that it no longer produces smartphones, but rather focus on the development of more profitable security software. Thursday's transaction will see TCL Communications handling all of the new BB branded phones manufactured and distributed worldwide as well as providing customer support and dedicated sales teams.
Canadian companies in 20 years of production were forced to abandon the smartphone market, citing the strong competition between Apple and Samsung. The new deal with TCL, the fourth-largest US mobile maker, will ensure that BB remains competitive in the global marketplace.
The new device will continue to use software developed by the BB, which claims to offer "the most secure and comprehensive global device software."
"At TCL Communications, we are committed to creating the best portfolio solutions, while ensuring quality support for consumers and business users who believe in the integrity of BlackBerry devices and the safety leadership of the brand, along with the Android platform, Said Nicolas Zibell, CEO of TCL Communications, in a statement.
"Together with BlackBerry's smartphone software platform, this partnership will strengthen our position in the global mobile market," Zibell added.
TCL also manufactures Alcatel-branded devices and is involved in the manufacture of the latest DTEK50 and DTEK60 handsets from the BB. The new agreement allows TCL to manufacture and distribute equipment in all regions except India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.
Another joint venture announced in September granted PT BB Merah Putih the right to sell new BlackBerry devices in Indonesia, the company's largest mobile phone market.

BB's security software division in the third quarter revenue of 156 million US dollars, down nearly 10 million US dollars the previous quarter.
More information on product roadmaps and availability of devices will be released in the coming months, BB said.
