Babies Photography:

The babies photography, those adorable photos of children posing in baskets and buckets, was not on my radar when I was pregnant with my first child. And, later I discovered, if you do not book while you’re pregnant, you’re not lucky because the poses you see in those pictures can only happen within the first few weeks.

With my second child, I booked a session for newborns in the middle of my second trimester, I called the photographer right after Harlow was born along with my friends and family, and then we had our photo shoot when my baby was only ten days old.

I found the whole experience fascinating, so I asked our photographer if she could answer some questions about how she works with new parents to get the photos that they will no doubt treasure forever.

Below are 12 questions and answers accompanied by Bilal’s newborn portraits taken at his NYC studio. babies photography.

1. What is the ideal age for a newborn study session?

For the studio picture, the ideal age is between 5 and 12. When the babies are so small, they spend a lot of time sleeping and still cuddle in very sweet poses, similar to the positions they were in when they were in the womb. After two weeks, the babies go through a period of growth and begin to stretch their arms and legs, and will not be so docile to snuggle to take a picture or sleep deeply, which is necessary for some poses and photographs on struts like the buckets.

2. How far in advance should you reserve your session?

You must book your session as far as possible, as early as your second trimester, I usually book sessions 3-4 months in advance and for busy photography seasons, it can even take between 5 and 6 months. of parents who have just given birth who want to book an appointment and I have no availability, then they get very sad because it is such a short period of time to take those special portraits and they missed it.

3. What happens if the babies do not reach their due dates?

I have time before and after, so parents are guaranteed space, no matter when their baby arrives. babies photography.

4. How long does a session take?

The study sessions usually last 3 to 4 hours, which includes baby portraits by yourself and then with each parent and then with the whole family. That may seem like a long time, but usually about half of that. We spent time feeding and comforting the baby so that he feels sleepy and happy for the portraits.

5. What should your baby use in a newborn session?

Most of the pictures of newborns in the studio are made naked to capture the smallness of being a newborn, so it’s easy to take and take away. If you prefer to have your baby’s clothes in the photos, something is important. that fits them well, big clothes never look good on anyone in the pictures, but on babies, it really looks terrible babies photography.

6. What else should you bring?

Some good things to bring are pacifiers, a change of clothes for you (if you are going to be in the photos that hold a naked baby that could be shit), some extra diapers and wipes, extra formula or bottles if you are not breastfeed and any special blankets or toys you want to be included in the photos.

7. What do you do to make sure the baby is comfortable?

One of the most important things is to make sure the room is very hot, I keep the heat on and I have a heater next to the baby, I will also play white sound or soft music depending on what the baby responds best to. quiet and sleeping babies (sometimes also parents, I have had many parents sleeping on my couch), nor do I force a baby to adopt a posture in which he or she feels uncomfortable and let the baby tell me in what posture he’s happier cuddled. babies photography.

8. How should you choose a photographer?

There are many photographers with different levels of experience and different styles, so first I would see if you like the style of the photographers: their accessories, poses, lighting, positions, etc. Then I would make sure they have done a good number of sessions I’ve heard horror stories from inexperienced photographers or from mothers who raise a camera thinking it looks easy and then they throw themselves with a bucket or a baby falls off the pillow.

9. What are the safety precautions used during a session?

Weighing the buckets and accessories is very important so that the baby does not tip over and get hurt.” Another is the pose itself: the newborn necks are very delicate, so you should be very careful with the positioning. posture falls apart, you do not want the baby to fall or hurt your neck, I use a very large bag of beans that was designed specifically for newborn photography, so if the baby leans to one side, it will be very protected and On a soft surface, everything that is used from the blankets to the hair ties is washed between each session to keep everything very clean and free of germs. babies photography.

10. How do you handle pee and poop when you take off your diaper?

“There is no way to sweeten this: babies photographers pee and shit a lot.” Blankets and accessories are often spoken. That’s why everything is 100% washable and it’s not a big deal. Just continue and throw it into the bathroom once the session ends. Parents must also be prepared. If you’re going to be in the photos, I do not recommend you bring your favorite shirt or expensive clothes.

11. What are poses your favorites?

I always love the pictures of a baby in a cube that sleeps soundly with his head resting on his hands, it is very sweet and makes it a beautiful birth announcement, I also love a baby curled up on his belly with his hands tucked under from the side of the head and feet tucked under his butt, most babies love being in that position because it reminds them of the uterus, but my favorite is a baby curled up in the arms of his parents with his head leaning on one of her parents’ hands, there is something so wonderful in the scale of seeing a little newborn in a big hand that only makes a magical and very special imagebabies photography.

12. What is the worst thing a parent can do during a session?

“The worst thing a parent can do is be nervous.” If your baby is crying, you should trust the photographer to comfort her. Continuously attacking and delivering the baby from one side to the other can make a baby more distressed. My advice is to take a deep breath and relax. I know it’s easy to be nervous, especially when it’s the first, but the best thing a parent can do is sit down and take a couple of hours to check their email, listen to music or just enjoy watching their newborn in all these adorable poses.
