Sheffield United 0-1 Everton: we have to improve during the summer – Wilder

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder praised his players for “massively achieving success” when the Blades lost a top six final in their first season in the Premier League after defeating Everton.

Richarlison’s header at the start of the second half ensured a victory for the Toffees and means that Wilder’s team cannot finish higher than the eighth with a game left.

The Blades were the favorites to make an immediate return to the championship but they exceeded expectations with a superb season in which they are guaranteed to finish in the top 10.

“The club and players have achieved massive results,” Wilder told BBC Sport. “Having talked about jumping into the top six means that payers deserve a huge amount of credit.

“We are happy with how the staff got the most out of the players. They left everything out once again.

“Yes, that bit of quality was missing in the last third, but the top 10 is guaranteed and another season in the Premier League – that’s what we should think about.”

The victory of the wolves against the Crystal Palace Later on Monday, Sheffield United’s low hopes of playing European football next season almost ended.

Richarlison’s goal, immediately after the break, gave life to the game after a terrible first half in which Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the only real chance, but his header hit the post.

David McGoldrick was denied an immediate response to Sheffield United when his low drive inside the box was blocked, but the Blades seemed decidedly out of the box.

Instead it was Everton who seemed the most likely to add his lead as Calvert-Lewin brought a rescue of Dean Henderson before Andre Gomes drove just out of place in the final stages.

Everton’s victory brought them over Southampton and 11th.

Sheffield United 0-1 Everton: Carlo Ancelotti praises the spirit of Everton in the victory of Blades

“The spirit was really good,” said Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti. “It’s no surprise, the players really know what our fans are asking for on the pitch: have a good spirit and fight and we have demonstrated it today.

“We had opportunities on the counterattack, I’m really happy with the performance. We are at the end of the season, but this fantastic spirit can be a good sign for the future.”

The impressive Blades campaign begins to make itself felt

Sheffield United’s players worked hard in the game and looked exhausted full time

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was extremely critical of his players after Leicester’s 2-0 defeat last time, calling them League One and Championship players playing in the Premier League.

The 52-year-old is known for his tough amorous approach to management – an attitude that has helped his team play beyond their perceived individual skills this season.

Wilder clearly expected a positive reaction as he called the same part that started in Foxes’ defeat. There was a lot of puffs and puffs from his players against the Toffees but they lacked quality in the last third.

There was also a distinct lack of urgency, with the efforts of a long, but enormously impressive first season in the Premier League, which seems to be starting to take its toll.

They pressed in the last few minutes while Everton sat backwards but finished the game without pulling a shot on goal.

Regardless, Sheffield United still has a game of a superb season and can be proud of its efforts, whether to secure European football next season or not.

Richarlison stresses the importance of Toffees

Richarlison’s goal was his 14th in the Premier League this season

This was a much needed victory for Everton with their season which risked fading away disappointingly.

A streak of two wins and a tie after restarting was followed by a four-game winless streak that ended a top 10’s hopes.

Carlo Ancelotti approached this game with an eye to next season, evaluating his options from the club’s youth team and giving promising 18-year-old defender Jarrad Branthwaite his first start in the Premier League while 19-year-old striker Ellis Simms was on the bench.

But whatever changes Ancelotti decides to make to his team during the summer, this game has underlined the importance of Richarlison for the aspirations of the Toffees next season.

He was one of the few players on both sides who tried to make something happen in the boring first half with some determined races, while his goal – a superbly guided header after an intelligent race – which ultimately provided the spark of which the game needed.

Richarlison has so far scored 15 goals this season – 14 of those arriving in the Premier League – an impressive return in a difficult campaign for Everton in which they had threatened to be involved in a relegation battle before Ancelotti’s arrival in December.

An entire pre-season of working with the Italian and the Brazilian has a real chance of becoming a forward of 20 goals per season next year.

The Man of the Match – Richarlison (Everton)

Richarlison’s movement and the superbly guided header showed the difference between the two sides

A rare empty space for the Blades: the statistics

  • This was Everton’s first away game against Sheffield United since October 1972, ending a streak of eight consecutive visits to Bramall Lane without victory.
  • Sheffield United have lost four of their nine Premier League games since the restart (W3 D2), as many as they had in the previous 21 before the break (W9 D8 L4).
  • All five of Everton’s away matches in the Premier League this season have been accomplished with one goal. They are the only division team this season to have scored 100% of their away wins with one goal.
  • Sheffield United have failed to record a shot on goal in a home game for the first time since August 2016, in a 0-3 defeat against Southend in League One.
  • Everton has held two draws in his last four away games in the Premier League, having previously conceded 14 away games away.
  • Everton has scored 14 Premier League goals this season – only Liverpool have scored more goals (16). They are Toffees’ most voted goals in a single campaign from 2010-11 (also 14)
  • Richarlison has scored 26 Premier League goals since joining Everton – of the Brazilian players in the top five European leagues, only Neymar (28) scored more at that time.
  • All three assists of Gylfi Sigurdsson in the Premier League for Everton this season have been for direct goals.
