But federal sides in Portland, Oregon have proved controversial. Local officials say they have heightened tensions between the ongoing protests.
Critics say Trump’s initiative is part of his reelection campaign.
Since the death on 25 May of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota, there have been protests – sometimes descended into civil disorder – in dozens of U.S. cities.
What is the legend of operations?
Named after a four-year-old boy, LeGend Taliferro, who was shot dead in the face while sleeping in his family home in Kansas City in June. The boy’s mother joined the president in Wednesday’s announcement.
Trump said: “This fury of violence upsets the conscience of our nation.”
He blamed this for “a shocking explosion of shootings, murders, murders and heinous crimes of violence”.
“This bloodshed must end,” he said. “This bloodshed will end.”
United States Attorney General William Barr, who was also with Trump, said he sent some 200 federal agents to Kansas City, Missouri, sending a “comparable” number to Chicago and another 35 to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In addition, more than $ 60 million in federal grants have been made available so that more police officers can be hired in the affected cities.
Barr said that expanding federal law enforcement would involve “classic crime fighting”, unlike the deployment of agents of the National Security Department to “defend against riots and mob violence” in Portland, Oregon.
What is going on in those cities?
Officers quickly used crowd control ammunition in an attempt to disperse hundreds of people gathered outside a federal court.
Officers were accused of driving unmarked vehicles in Oregon’s largest city while wearing military labors and arbitrarily arresting a handful of demonstrators.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot confirmed Tuesday that federal agents would be deployed to his city to reinforce local police.
“We welcome the real partnership, but we don’t welcome the dictatorship,” Lightfoot said at a press conference, warning that federal officials shouldn’t try the same tactics they used in Portland.
In the latest incident in Chicago, at least 14 people were shot outside a funeral home in a suspected gang attack.
The city has seen 34% more homicides than last year, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
A 2018 FBI survey found that the violent crime rate in Albuquerque was 3.7 times the national average. Murder and rape rates were more than double the national average for that year.
Kansas City, meanwhile, is well on its way to recording its most murderous ever in 2020, according to the Kansas City Star. The city has now seen 110 murders, with another 50 recorded in the larger metropolitan area.
Fight against crime or electoral?
Analysis by Tara McKelvey, Kansas City
Many people in Kansas City say that the president’s plan is not what this place needs. Kansas City supports Democrats and many are opposed to the president’s policies and oppose his aggressive mandate of law and order.
Traditionally, crime-fighting programs are popular during election campaigns and the president’s critics say this initiative is aimed more at its conservative supporters in the rural heart than at those living in Kansas City and other urban areas.
Trump critics say the initiative is not actually an effort to combat urban crime, arguing that it is simply a way to spark enthusiasm among the president’s supporter base before the election.
