Every year we commemorate World Tuberculosis Day (TB) on March 24 to raise public awareness of the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB and to intensify efforts to end the global tuberculosis epidemic. The date marks the day in 1882 when dr. Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes tuberculosis, which paved the way for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Tuberculosis remains the most deadly infectious killer in the world. Every day, over 4000 people die from tuberculosis and nearly 30,000 people fall ill with this preventable and curable disease. Global efforts to combat tuberculosis have saved about 58 million lives since the year 2000. To accelerate the response to tuberculosis in countries to achieve goals – Heads of state met and made strong commitments to end tuberculosis in the United Nations first high-level meeting in September 2018.

The theme of World Tuberculosis Day 2020 – ‘It’s time’ – emphasizes the urgency to act on the commitments made by global leaders to:

  • increase access to prevention and treatment;
  • build responsibility;
  • ensure sufficient and sustainable funding also for research;
  • promote the end of stigma and discrimination, and
  • promote a fair, rights-based and people-centered TB response.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a joint initiative “Find. Treat. Everyone. #EndTB” with the Global Fund and Stop TB Partnership, with the aim of accelerating the response to tuberculosis and guaranteeing access to treatment, in line with the general WHO push towards universal health coverage.

    On this World Tuberculosis Day, WHO calls on governments, affected communities, civil society organizations, health professionals and national / international partners to join forces under the “Find.” Banner. To deal. All. #EndTB “to ensure that no one is left behind.

    It’s time to act! It is time to end TB.
